Home Security - Securing Your Home Over The Holidays

Criminal activity increases during the holidays so it’s important to take precautions. Brinant Security Group gives insight into home security and how to keep your valuables safe.
Just because you are on holiday doesn’t mean that criminals are also taking a break. In fact, criminal activity generally increases during peak holiday periods.

The last thing you want to worry about when going away is whether or not your home is secure and safe. Relaxing on holiday should be your top priority, by ensuring that your home security is up to standard before you leave will help you relax and enjoy your holiday.

Prevent Burglary and Home Invasion

Living in South Africa means that your security measures inside and out of your house are most likely already in place. However, as the holidays come around, the threat of burglary and invasion becomes even greater. There is an 8% average increase in home break-ins and robbery during December alone.

Areas where the majority of people tend to go away, quickly become holiday hot spots for crime. Those “sleepy” neighborhood’s are at the greatest risk, especially those in suburbs without guarding. With this in mind, it is vital to inspect and check all your current security measures. If you have an alarm system installed in your household, insure that it is in full working order.

Holiday safety tips for your home security before you leave home:

  • A fully packed holiday car parked in front of the house is a green light for those opportunistic criminals.
  • Test your alarm system for faults; test all the zones of your alarm to ensure that they are working correctly. Have your alarm battery tested!
  • Inspect the perimeter of your home to ensure that there aren’t any holes in fences or walls and that all gates are secure.
  • Make sure that CCTV cameras are working and are positioned in such a way that they give a clear view of what is happening both inside and outside your property.
  • Check that the electric fence is in good working order. Cut back any plants and trees that may interfere with the fence’s efficient functioning.
  • Put outside lights on a timer. For added security, you may consider putting the inside lights on a timer as well in order to give the impression that someone is home.
  • Double-check that all windows, doors and security gates are locked before your leave. It’s highly recommended that you inspect all the burglar guards and repair or replace where necessary.
  • Make sure any outbuildings, including storerooms, are well secured.
  • The neighbourhood crime watch can be very useful to protect your home while you are gone.
  • If your neighbourhood does not have a crime watch organisation, get to know your neighbours. This way you can let them know when you are planning to leave, and they can help you watch over your home.
  • Think about offering your neighbours, to let them use your driveway if they are expecting guests over the festive period. The activity will make the home appear occupied.
  • Leave a set of keys with someone you trust in case something goes wrong inside your house.
  • Its always important to arrange easy access for your armed response officer, most of the times time your home security system can prevent armed response officers getting to the burglar in time.
  • Arrange for your post to be cleared from your letterbox on a regular basis while you are away.
  • Last but not least – check your insurance policies before you leave. Make sure that items such as electronic goods are sufficiently insured to cover the replacement value if something goes wrong. Although thieves tend to be pretty determined, there’s no reason to make their lives easier, so lock any valuables away.
Finally enjoy and make the most of your trip! You can now have a fun and relaxing holiday, knowing that Brinant Security secures your home is safe from all threats.
